Elijah is one month old. Despite that fact that I have yet to write Nathan's 2 year update, I thought I would do this on time.
All about Elijah
The Good
Eating - he's a great eater, and usually only nurses 20 minutes total. He's gaining weight and getting awesome rolls on his legs and arms.
Disposition - Elijah is still very laid back and likes most things. He especially loves sleeping in his car seat, which is a huge answer to prayer for me!
The Cry - A good cry? Yes! Elijah has a sweet little grunty, whiny cry. Rarely will he wail. When he does loudly cry I know he really needs something, usually food.
Schedule - Elijah is great about spacing out his feedings. He eats every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. He also has kind of naturally adapted to following the "eat, play, sleep" schedule that we do.
Cloth Diapers - I started using cloth diapers this week. Elijah is a very heavy wetter, so these have been wonderful, even though they give him a large diaper butt.
Pacifiers - They are not a sure fire soother, but Elijah likes the pacifier and goes to sleep with it.
Sleep - Elijah is a good sleeper. He figured out his days and nights right away. He is also usually easy to put to sleep. I read a new book called "The Baby Whisperer solves all your problems." and she suggested a nighttime routine that is more gentle than cry it out. Like with Nathan I try to keep the "going to sleep" routine to 5 minutes or under, and Elijah is usually asleep before I put him down. He is also good about putting himself to sleep if I put him down awake, unless he has bad gas or the hiccups. On a good day, Elijah and Nathan are on the same schedule and they wake within a 1/2 hour of each other in the morning (7:00am ish?) and they take their afternoon naps at the same time.
The not so good.
Hiccups - Elijah gets the hiccups about once a day and they keep him from sleeping. If I give him some gripe water, they usually go right away.
Gas - Despite my attempts at burping him, Elijah has gas and reflux. Nathan had a similar problem when he was young too. I alternate between gripe water and gas drops to help him. I have also tilted his crib up at one end to try to help with the reflux. And I know that he will grow out of this eventually.
Skin - We have been fighting baby acne all month. I feel so bad for the little guy, it looks painful even though I know its not.
LOUD sleeper - Nathan was a loud sleeper as a newborn, but Elijah takes LOUD sleeping to a whole new level. He grunts, sighs, and squeeks all the time. I had to take him out of church 2 weeks in a row because he was so loud AND HE WAS SLEEPING. The guy sitting in front of me at church last week literally leaned over to his wife and said, "oh, that's a baby" five minutes into the sermon. Elijah only wakes me up a few times a night to nurse, I wake up several other times thinking he needs to nurse but they are false alarms.

Hi Katie! This is gonna sound weird, but I just read that breastmilk actually really helps with baby acne. Meaning to take some milk and put it on his face I guess. It was on babycenter.com.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear the transition to 2 is going well.
